How to Put Custom Backgrounds On Your PSP

PSP (firmware ver.1.50) doesn’t have a built-in application that enables you to change the background image of your PSP. To change your background image, you need to install a software designed for the task. And that is the job of the PSPersonalize. I have added some background information about this software in this article and on how it works. You can use it as your reference and get familiarized with the steps that I highlighted below.
PSPersonalize is a program that will enable you to change the background image of your PSP. The default backgrounds are .bmp files that are color gradient. The backgrounds are different for each month and all of these .bmp files are stored on the PSP core, meaning its firmware. To change these, PSPersonalize is a program that moves .bmp files from your memory stick and flashes it to the firmware. It overwrites the old one and puts on the new image. Basically, PSPersonalize takes a .bmp that you have created and replace the one on the PSP. This program is only applicable on PSP with firmware version 1.50 since version 2.0+ supports themes and allows you change the background image without the need for any homebrewed application. This should not damage your PSP, but since it is "homebrewed" you must use it at your own risk.
How to change the background:
1. Make sure that you have “Hide known file extensions” checked. You
can find this option at the control panel > appearance and themes >
folder Options > view.
2. Download the PSPersonalize. A free download is available at psp-hacks.
3. Extract the contents and move the two extracted folders to the
PSP/GAME directory.
4. Name all your images that you want to their appropriate month. For
Example: If you want to change the picture for the month of June, name
the picture "06" without quotes.
MONTHS:
01.BMP - January
02.BMP - February
03.BMP - March
04.BMP - April
05.BMP - May
06.BMP - June
07.BMP - July
08.BMP - August
09.BMP - September
10.BMP - October
11.BMP - November
12.BMP – December
5. Put the files directly under the Main Directory on your PSP.
6. Go to the Game Section and highlight PSPersonalize and click on it.
7. Select the picture you want to use. Only 1 at a time is recommended
but you can select all at once.
To create an image for use, you must follow the following parameters:
-150kbs or less (If higher it will load incorrectly)
-24-bit BMP image (Only this format)
-no bigger than 300:170, recommended size is: 250 x 142
Use an image editor if you want to resize wallpaper or a larger image. The original/default background of PSP can be downloaded at files.pspupdates.qj.net. A tutorial is also available psp-hacks for your convenience.Changing the background of your psp is relatively easy. Give it a try and just follow the procedures that I noted in this article. Not many complexities involved. And if you are stuck somewhere, just visit the website psp-hacks for reference.
